| 内容記述 | This article focuses on the writings of late Prof. MATSUEDA Itaru to examine his worldview and thought. The result of analysing the frequency of references to the literature mentioned in his seven books shows that the highest rate of reference was to China-related sources. The root of his interest in ‘Asia’ can be traced to his father, a Chinese literature scholar, whose books he came to know in everyday life. In the process of studying Western art, he came across the German-Jewish art historian Aby Warburg and was inspired by his method. During his master’s studies, Prof. Matsueda’s interest moved from the West to the past, and then to the East. In addition, the story of his family name, which he was told repeatedly by his father as a child, formed an image of his ancestors as Korean potters, and had a significant impact on his worldview which he linked his own blood to the continent. The name of Wako University’s Open College ‘Paideia’, which Prof. Matsueda named, is thought to be inspired by the Greek philosopher Plato’s idea of education, παιδεια, as the construction of new knowledge through dialogue with others, and he also followed this. His achievements were to develop academic studies and education at Wako University through a strong curiosity that was not bound by existing academic fields and a spirit of inquiry that transcended specialisation. |
